NOT A CHANCE!

So I had the privilege of studying Greek this past year which included an opportunity to return to a favourite passage of mine recorded by Matthew. "Unless you change and become as little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven." (18:3) The word "never" is key to the theological impact of Jesus' words. In the Greek, there is a double negative here, which unlike the English does not cancel itself out but commands attention to emphatic importance. If translated literally with its…

How much blame or credit do parents deserve for how their kids turn out?

A few weeks ago I was interviewed by Christianity Today, and it is great to see that excerpts were published in the January issue. It deals with the idea that no matter how we raise our kids, they make choices of their own. The idea is that we should be the best parents we can, but not blame ourselves if they still make decisions with which we are uncomfortable. If you would like to read it online, see this web page:… Continue

From the Director

Welcome! I'm La Verne Tolbert and I am delighted you are viewing this new interactive web site. It is an expression of The Society for Children’s Spirituality: Christian Perspectives, an educational organization exploring the spiritual experiences and development of children. This includes biblical and theological perspectives, research, and approaches to the teaching and nurture of children. In addition to this web site, exploration and scholarship in the area of children’s spiritual formation are encouraged by a mentorship program for graduate students engaged in research. The society also sponsors an international conference every three years where scholars present the latest research and best ministry practices. Conferences in 2003, 2006, and 2009 were held at Concordia University. Two books have resulted from the conferences, and a third is in progress. For details on the books, previous conferences, resources for researchers and practitioners, and other aspects of the conference and society, see the main website at www.childspirituality.org. Enjoy this web site and return often!

La Verne Tolbert, Ph.D. is author of Keeping You and Your Kids Sexually Pure, and Teaching Like Jesus: A Practical Guide to Christian Education in Your Church. She is an adjunct professor in the graduate school at Azusa Pacific University and president of Teaching Like Jesus Ministries, a parachurch ministry that equips leaders in the local church.
